Background
Editorial and publication layout has always been one of my favourite design projects. From my early days as a designer with Auto Trader in New Zealand and later as instrumental in the design and layout of the Galway Independent Newspaper I have always enjoyed the challenge of the speed and thought required to quickly organise copy and images into a useful communicative whole.
The Work
Multi-page publication design is a mainstay of any agency or design organisation. I spent almost 8 years with the Galway Independent as a senior designer and production manager honing the skills of layout, typography, page design and the technical and organisational skills that go along with producing a weekly newspaper. I would consider layout and layout design, a core of graphic design, as some of my strongest skill sets.

Wiora 2017 Aran Island Yacht Race
I was approached to design, layout and output to print the Wiora 2017 Aran Island Yacht Race magazine with an impossibly quick turnaround of 48 hours. After my initial design was signed off I then set about taking and editing the text into a flowable format alongside designing and building the majority of the advertisements.
The Galway Independent
The Galway Independent Newspaper was a free weekly newspaper distributed throughout Galway city and county. Quality, integrity, accuracy and design excellence were the important elements throughout my tenure there. Working closely with the editorial, sales and management teams and overseeing the design and production of the newspaper to a weekly deadline with a small dedicated design team was difficult and challenging but ultimately a great opportunity to learn and work with some great people. The newspaper varied from 48 – 96 pages weekly depending on the amount of advertisements or features. Each week the layout was started from scratch and planned on the fly as ads were sold. The majority of editorial layout was accomplished over 2 days as the final product shaped up.
